ETM-Bay Area Opens its Doors!
BEGINS FIRST YEAR IN THE BAY AREA
ETM-Bay Area Opens its Doors to Serve
At-Risk Children in the San Francisco/Bay Area
at Peres Elementary School
Education Through Music, Inc. (ETM), a New York-based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing music education to disadvantaged children, is thrilled to announce the opening of its second affiliate chapter, ETM-Bay Area. Located in San Francisco, CA, ETM-Bay Area will continue ETM's 17-year mission of promoting and supporting music instruction in low-income areas in order to enhance students' academic performance and general development. ETM-Bay Area is headed by Executive Director Keri Lindell.
ETM-Bay Area will partner with the Peres Elementary School in Richmond, CA, which serves over 500 at-risk children, 100% of whom are eligible for the Federal Free Lunch program, 99% are minorities, and 58% are part of the ELL (English Language Learners) program. The organization will form multi-year partnerships with Bay Area public and parochial elementary schools that lack sufficient resources for school-wide music education. In each partnership, ETM-Bay Area staff work with the principal to design a program that addresses the individual partner school's needs, and incorporates comprehensive, year-long music instruction for every child. All students at Peres Elementary School, including those in special education, will have quality music instruction for the entire year as a way to support the academic goals of the school. The principal of the school is Dr. Janet Scott.
"I believe that every student should have access to quality music education programs in school," said ETM-Bay Area Executive Director Keri Lindell. "I am excited to bring ETM's model to students in disadvantaged schools in the Bay Area."

About Education Through Music, Inc.
Founded in 1991, Education Through Music, Inc. (ETM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes the sustainable integration of music into the curricula - including reading, social studies, math and science - of elementary and middle schools in order to enhance students' academic performance and general development. ETM is unique within the arts-in-education community for our focus on academics and changing the current state of the educational system. ETM's unique methodology engenders systemic changes in teaching practices that help children learn, think and socialize better. ETM works with a variety of groups throughout the country, including individual schools, local and statewide education agencies, and arts and cultural organizations. We serve our partner schools from multiple angles and involve all members of the school community in reforming the school to incorporate the arts. Music is taught in its own right and also as a means of supporting learning in other areas. ETM's programming currently serves over 9,000 children in 20 public and parochial schools in New York City, and its model is being adopted by schools across the country, including two affiliates in Los Angeles and the Oakland/Bay area.
